Either, as long as they’re aimed properly and used only when there’s actual fog/smoke/haze.

Depends on the car and if it's only the fogs. Sometimes I see everything yellowed. It generally looks bad then. But, just the fogs, on most cars as long as not too much yellow, looks fine/good.

fog lights have traditionally been yellow because they filter out the blue end of the visible spectrum. and that’s important because human vision sucks at resolving the blue-violet end of the visible spectrum. When you introduce rain and fog into the equation, it’s even worse because blue light causes annoying and distracting glare. If you wear eyeglasses, you can see this phenomenon. just look at a light source like a mercury-vapor lamp, a car’s HID headlamps, or a multicolor LED sign. if you look at it through the edges of your eyeglasses’ lenses, you’ll see the blue portion of the light separate out first.

you’re welcome. now can you help explain that to all of those Dylan Cody McSisterfuckers out there who put 9000K HID “super blue” capsules in their headlamps because they totally think they can see better?

I’ve always had a soft spot for yellow fogs since owning an ES300 that had them from the factory. (Not mine but you get the idea)

That's interesting. My car has LED fog lights that have a blueish tint to them. I can't imagine them being super effective.

Thank France. The French figured out that yellow light does not reflect off the water as readily as the blue in white light does during the mid 1930's. It more effectively cuts through the bad weather and shows you the road. All cars registed in France until 1993 all cars in France were required to have yellow headlights. This tradition started during World War II so that the French civilian cars would stand out form enemy vehicles.

The Government enacted a law on the 3rd of November, 1936 stating that all vehicles put into production in 1937 are required to have yellow headlights. The French being who they are, didn’t abandon these headlights until 1993 when forced by the European Unions conformity standards. Today, it is illegal to drive in France with yellow headlights unless your car was first registered before 1993.

Like yellow shooting glasses are used in target practice. Thus, less glare + clearer vision = saferness. Also race cars have yellow headlights for that reason.

what does “sporty” or “compact” have to do with light? the lights aren’t a damn fashion accessory.

and you’ll see most endurance racing cars with yellow headlamps, since they race whether it’s rain or shine:

At least in the part of the United States where I am, where fog is a very very very rare occurrence, they are used almost exclusively as a fashion accessory.

“white” LEDs are usually blue LEDs imbedded in a blob of phosphorescent material; the blue light undergoes Stokes Shift in the phosphor which emits whitish light. Unfortunately there’s a wide range of hues of “white” LEDs out there.
